Derbyshire Action on Smoking - Pubs Project

Since 2003 Derbyshire Action on Smoking, in partnership with local council Environmental Services Departments, has been running a Pubs Project across the county. The aim of the project has been to provide licensees with information regarding the dangers to health of secondhand smoke, to both hospitality workers and the general public.

Over 400 pubs have been visited and licensees have been provided with information packs that show what is in tobacco smoke, the detrimental effect that this has on health, and their duties under existing Health & safety legislation to provide a safe working environment for their staff and customers.

Derbyshire is leading the way with its numerous smoke free pubs.

Licensees have been encouraged to provide adequate provision for non-smokers and many businesses now acknowledge that this has had a positive effect on trade. Derbyshire Action on Smoking is delighted that the county has several smoke free pubs, way above the 1% national average.

In 2007, under the new legislation, all workplaces and enclosed public places will have to be smoke free. Derbyshire Action on Smoking will continue to support publicans with the implementation of smoke free policies enabling them to be ready for the new legislation.
